Introducción
Los nematodos son probablemente el grupo más abundante dentro de la meiofauna. Su diversidad total de especies puede exceder la de los insectos (Platt et al. 1984).Son ubicuos en el entorno marino bentónico, que se encuentra en la gran mayoría de los microhábitats, desde el supralitoral hasta las profundidades abisales. Actualmente hay 326 especies registradas para Chile (Lee et al. 2008), la mayoría intermareal. La mayoría de estas especies fueron descritas por Wolfgang Weiser (1953, 1954, 1956, 1959) trabajando con material recolectado durante la expedición de Lund a Chile (1948-49) (Brattström and Dahl 1951). Información más reciente proviene del trabajo sobre la familia Epsilonematidae por Lorenzen (1974) y Clasing (1980, 1983, 1986), el trabajo de Chen y Vincx (1998, 1999, 2000a, 2000b) en la región de Magallanes, e informes sobre la nematofauna de la trinchera de Atacama (Gambi et al. 2003)
