Su diversidad total de especies puede exceder la de los insectos (<a title=\"platt1984\" href=\"http:\/\/meiochile.matthewlee.org\/?page_id=38#platt1984\">Platt et al. 1984<\/a>).Son ubicuos en el entorno marino bent\u00f3nico, que se encuentra en la gran mayor\u00eda de los microh\u00e1bitats, desde el supralitoral hasta las profundidades abisales. Actualmente hay 326 especies registradas para Chile (<a title=\"lee2008\" href=\"http:\/\/meiochile.matthewlee.org\/?page_id=38#lee2008\">Lee et al. 2008<\/a>), la mayor\u00eda intermareal. La mayor\u00eda de estas especies fueron descritas por Wolfgang Weiser (<a title=\"weiser1953\" href=\"http:\/\/meiochile.matthewlee.org\/?page_id=38#weiser1953\">1953<\/a>, <a title=\"weiser1954\" href=\"http:\/\/meiochile.matthewlee.org\/?page_id=38#weiser1954\">1954<\/a>, <a title=\"weiser1956\" href=\"http:\/\/meiochile.matthewlee.org\/?page_id=38#weiser1956\">1956<\/a>, <a title=\"weiser1959\" href=\"http:\/\/meiochile.matthewlee.org\/?page_id=38#weiser1959\">1959<\/a>) trabajando con material recolectado durante la expedici\u00f3n de Lund a Chile (1948-49) (<a title=\"brattstrom1951\" href=\"http:\/\/meiochile.matthewlee.org\/?page_id=38#brattstrom1951\">Brattstr\u00f6m and Dahl 1951<\/a>).
