Freshwater osmotic shock method

The majority of meiofaunal groups use some method or other to maintain their position in the substrate. This make extracting live fauna from the substrate difficult. One method for extracting live fauna is osmotic shock. The sample is immersed for a brief period in freshwater, the fauna removed using decantation, and then returned, immediately, to seawater, where the majority will quickly recover.
